At the Masonic Temple last night I learned the origin of the phrase Black Balled. When voting for a candidate if the Mason approves of the person, a white ball is placed in the ballot box. If voting against the person, a Black Ball is placed in the Ballot Box. Voting is imimeatily suspended and the reason for Black Balling the candidate is determined. If the reason is valid, the candidate is rejected.  All of this is done in double topsecret.

I found it interesting that the Black Ball is actually a cube
